Chapter 48

Loshak drifted in and out, sleep and the pain meds swelling warmth into his cheeks. Holding him under.

He woke to find himself in the chair in his motel room, soft light spilling from the lamp on the opposite side of the bed. An open folder full of papers sprawled on his lap — the rap sheet, military history, and other miscellaneous papers relating to Walton Banks.

Bits of the files came back to him now. It’d been dry reading. Banks had suffered his share of minor infractions — assault, drunk and disorderly — and more than a few reprimands for brushes with authority in his military time. All of it paled compared to what he was up to now.

Loshak blinked and looked around the room, eyes catching on the alarm clock next to the bed. He blinked again as he processed the information.

It was late. After 3 A.M.

He checked his phone. Darger had never responded.

Guess she really did call it an early night.

He scratched at the stubble shrouding his jaw. He should probably check—

He stood then, and his knee twinged. Bad.

The pain blinded him for just a second. Then it flared steadily, bolts of it shooting from the joint up into the meat of his thigh.

He leaned over to grab the orange bottle on the nightstand. Shook a couple of Vicodin into his palm and knocked them back with the help of his bottle of water.

He took a few breaths and waited for the pain to recede, his consciousness seeming to exist only in that throbbing connective tissue in his knee for this moment.

His heart knocked. The alarm clock’s red digits rolled over from 3:11 to 3:12. And then the drugs hit. The sharpness of the hurt pulled back into a dull ache quickly. Some chemical bliss swirled anew in his head, though it failed to beat back the exhaustion.

His chest and shoulders loosened up. Allowed some deep breaths to enter and exit.

Thank Christ.

He stripped and got into bed. Clicked out the light. Felt a thin sheen of sweat on his forehead and the back of his neck from when the pain had hit. Damn.

Right away he drifted toward sleep. Slipping deeper and deeper.

What had he been thinking about before all of this?

Darger. Right.

Well, whatever Darger might have found, they’d figure it all out tomorrow morning.

For now? Sleep.
